Caltech tunnel arena : This is the virtual reality arena where we performed the experiments in our paper "Visual control of altitude in flying Drosophila" (Straw, Lee & Dickinson, 2010, Current Biology). There are five cameras filming down into the arena tracking flies in realtime. We project computer generated imagery on the floor and walls of the arena on the basis of a fly's current position and experimental conditions. Mamarama : Mamarama is a 2-meter diameter free-flight fly tracking arena. The red and green squares provide strong visual contrast to flies released within. Despite this, in the near-infrared (850 nm), the transmits almost equal amounts of light in both color regions, and allows flies to be tracked in 3D as they fly.
